Plantronics 975 not connecting to second phone on power on

I have a Plantronics 975 bluetooth headset and it can connect to two phones at the same time. I only recently tried to use this feature and there are a couple quirks not mentioned in the manual or FAQ I want to make note of.
What is already on the net:
Plantronics Discovery 975 supports multipoint technology, which allows you to use one earpiece with two different Bluetooth mobile phones.
How to Turn the Multipoint Feature On and Off
To use more than one phone, you must turn the multipoint feature on. When this feature is off, your earpiece can connect to only one Bluetooth phone.
1 With your earpiece turned off, press and hold the volume and call control buttons simultaneously until earpiece turns on and indicator flashes white 2 times.
2 To pair earpiece to a second phone, see "Pairing Your Earpiece" on page 7 -see below.
How to Initiate a Call
The earpiece initiates or redials a call on the phone that most recently made an outgoing call. To use the second phone, initiate the call using the controls on the second phone.
How to Answer a Call While Talking on the Other Phone

To answer the second call, the first call must be terminated or placed on hold using the phone, if your phone has a hold feature.
1 Tap the call control button once to hang up the existing call.
2 Tap the call control button again to answer the new call from the other phone.

How to Pair Your Phone with Your Earpiece for the First Time

3 Use the commands on your phone to locate and select your earpiece.9xxPlantronics.
4 If prompted for the PIN code or Passkey, enter 0000.Pairing is successful when the indicator on your earpiece flashes white.
Note If your phone supports Secure Simple Pairing (SSP), you will not need to enter a PIN code or Passkey.

What is not mentioned is that when you power the headset OFF and back on again, it connects to the last handset used on the headset only. To get it to connect to the other headset you have to press the control button and the phone switches to the other handset (tries to connect to it). This is how to switch control of the headset from one handset to another, but the switch is necessary to use the headset again to the second handset. I think the headset still can only connect to one handset at a time but it keeps listening for the other handset and actually takes a second to switch to it if it hears a beep or a call come through. The handset that it was last using when being powered OFF is the one it will connect to when put back ON.

I found this out because I only use my headset for driving and switch the headset off every time I leave the car. For a couple days I went into the bluetooth menu on the second phone and connected the headset and thought that was how it was supposed to be done but now I know better, one click and the second phone is connected. Both handsets always recognise the headset is switched off and disconnected correctly. I am using a Nokia 5800 and 5130.
