Water pump with smart head not coming on

Before doing work on your pump disconnect the power and shut off both the inlet and outlet pipes. Have something ready to collect water because there will be water stored in the pump.

If the pump is not coming on at all on its own make sure there is power going to the pump. A breaker may have tripped if too many things were running at the same time from shared or common outlets. If there is power and you press the manual start switch/button on top the smart head, the pump may come on. If you still do not get any water being pushed, there is probably air in the pump. This manual button must be used sparingly, it runs the motor even if there is no water in it.

Make sure there is no air in the pump. If there is a bleed screw, open it very slowly until either only water or bubbles comes out. When you see this stop opening and wait until only water comes out. Ideally you should have a union on the inlet and outlet pipes close to the pump so it can be removed easily. Instead of the bleed screw you can open the union a couple turns to let air out as if you are using it as the bleed screw until only water comes out. Get ready to collect water coming out of the union. Try the pump again to see if that was the problem.

Another thing to check is if your tanks are clean. The sludge in the water in some areas is so bad that it settles at the bottom of the tank and if it is high enough the pump will pull it in and get damaged.

  1. Hey Ryan,
I've been experiencing the exact same problem with my smart head system. My pump has been down for months. I decided to try and fix it today but the same problem has occurred again. I converted the pump from 230volts to 115volts at the back of the pump by switching the clip. Everything was working fine and then the circuit blew. I've replaced the circuit now about five times. At this point I'm thinking to switch to a tank system cause I'm afraid to get a new smarthead and end up with the same problem. The Pump comes one but the smart head loses pressure and then the failure light comes on. Not sure if it's a pressure gauge issue or whether I need to run a breaker and leave the pump on 230 volts. It's a Goulds 3/4 J7S model. It's very powerful water flow. Haven't been able to find any valuable information about this problem until I stumbled over your experience...

    3. hey sean, have you got the issue resolved? I am experience same issue with my leo smart head pump

  2. Hi, Sean, I am no expert on the topic but it sounds like the problem is either in the switch box (where the power goes into the pump) or the smart head. Call around to hardwares or plumbers and see if you can get any free advice. Expect them to say you need a new smart head as it is another sale for them. If that is the consensus then I guess you will have to chance the purchase.

Please let me know how this turns out.

  4. The cause of the smart head not switch on when pressure is lost is the magnetic float inside the smart head under the diaphragm use a magnet near the center of the board to see if that is the cause

  14. Good day guys, i have a pentax .75hp pump with smarthead. Is it possible and how can i bypass the smarthead to make sure the pump is working?

  15. All the pump does is create the pressure, the smart head tells the pump when to come on and off, to test whether your pump is working or not, lock off the water mains put on the pump and see the water pressure you are getting if the pressure is not what you accustom tocoming out the taps, the pump may need to service and if you get no water atall coming out your taps, you know your pump definitely is not working. 27. Im not sure as i read these comments, if its 2020 listing cause there are not YEAR next to the dates. Some of you who says "NO LEAKS" may have one unseen "THE TOILET". others may be the "check valve" these are two leaks areas that are not seen easily or not checked. 684 4828
