Digicel Imax

I finally went to the Digicel Imax theater at One Woodbrook Place, POS. Today was 2 for one special on tickets and The Lorax was showing. I sat in row 'F' centre. The theatre is larger than I was expecting from the couple pictures I saw online. The seats were comfortable and reclined. The armrests are fixed, they don't fold up. There are steps only on the extreme left and right of the seats so getting in and out is a pain having to bother a long row of people to get out if you are close to the center. The screen is big and bright and the sound was sharp and strong. The staff was courteous and helpful. At the entrance to the theater are some interactive games you can play for free such as virtual football, virtual hockey, virtual basketball etc.

One thing I did not like was my experience of the 3D for some parts where the picture was blurry, I had to turn my head to the side instead of just looking across to see it sharply. It seems you need to basically look through the centre of the glasses to get the full 3D effect, just as in other cimenas (Movie Towne, Globe, National, etc). Also in the scenes where there was fast movement or panning big scenes the moving parts get blurry. I suspect it is because of an inadequate frame rate. The same thing happens is other cinemas. I recently saw the trailer for Wrath of the Titans in National in 3D and again today and I would say the experience was better in National as the picture was sharper and easier to see. I had to keep moving my head\eyes to see the trailer in Imax. The sound was better in Imax. Some edges were pixelated, but the far majority of the movie was clear and sharp. I would not have minded the sound to be louder but it was still enjoyable.

The equipment in National is still relatively new, the screen is bright and the 3D looks great. Some of the screens and Movie Towne (north and central) show dimly and are lacking.

If I go to Imax again it would be in a seat as far back as possible. I enjoyed the experience but it is not so outstanding I would say it totally blows away the other cinemas.

Update: I saw The Avengers in Imax. I was in one of the middle rows and about one third way to the right when facing the screen. I was uncomfortable for most of the movie as I had to turn my whole body to the left to face the centre of the screen. The chair is pointed almost directly straight ahead, so I would be staring at the right side of the screen if I looked straight ahead. The chairs needed to be pointed inward for the left and right sides which they are not. How hard would this have been to do? I did not try getting my ticket early enough which is why I got that seat. Lesson learnt.

What does Imax stand for?
"Imax" stands for "Image Maximised"?

March 18th 2012

I had a great weekend! According to my google blog stats I am now over 50,000 views! Saturday I attended a local TEDx event and was reminded of the high level of passion and intelligence we have in Trinidad and Tobago and the region. I wish Mr. Errol Fabien as well as the other speakers success in all their endeavours.

On Sunday I attended a free performance put on by the Brazillian String Quartet at NAPA. The musicians were amazing and to think this was free.. Afterwards there was a vin d'honneur, my first.
